Last month we did a version of reader’s theater in Homeschool Hub, adapted for an all ages group. First, we talked a little about theater and plays (some of the kids are part of our local kids Shakespeare group). Next we watched some readers theater videos before diving in.

For this Read it! Homeschool Hub I featured choose your own adventure stories, and let kids explore the format by making their own.

Most of what I found were chapter books, not picture books, so after we talked about the choose your own adventure genre, I read a short section from one of the chapter books, letting the kids vote each time there was a decision to make.

Homeschool Hub: Mock Caldecott Awards

For our last Homeschool Hub of the year, we held our own Mock Caldecott Awards to pick our favorite picture book. I compiled a list of the books we would read and consider, based on some of the mock Caldecott lists on the internet, and sent it to my families in advance.

Homeschool Hub: animal stories

For our first Homeschool Hub: Read it! program of the year, I pulled one of the last themes that the kids suggested last school year. The idea was stories told from the point of view of an animal; I changed it slightly to include all animal stories. Here’s what we did!

Homeschool Hub: Minecraft

For this month’s Homeschool Hub: Read it! program, we did Minecraft! I know, not technically a book based program, but the kids all LOVE Minecraft, and they kept suggesting it as a a theme, so I went with it. Kids came wearing Minecraft shirts and creeper hats. For a day (ok, an hour) I was really cool.

First, I made sure to tell the kids that I was sure they all knew a lot more about Minecraft than I did, so they could be the experts. (That’s when my coolness disappeared.)  Then, everyone shared their favorite Minecraft element. I had to limit it to one per person, since some kids would have talked for the entire program.
