New media storytime, the second

I talk about my first new media evening storytime here, and I had my second iteration of this program last month, with some of the kinks worked out and double the attendance!

I introduced the program this time merely by explaining what we were going to do and talking about book apps to start.

Book App: Red in Bed. One of the kids discovered the hidden white color (and accompanying note) when she was playing with the app afterward, and was super proud to show me.

Book: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. I only read about half this book; the kids were losing interest, similar to the experience I had with my first attempt at this program. I don’t know if it is the time of day (evening), the mixed ages, the expectation that the program is about apps, or just the presences of an ipad, but the kids don’t want to hear a paper book.

Then I talked about game apps and explained that we were going to try out a few; then the kids could try them out with their parents. As I’m showing each app, I try to add one parent tip for each app, either an extension activity that they could do, or a way that the app lends itself to joint media engagement and parent involvement.

App demo: Lazoo Squiggles (It looks like this app is currently available as part of the Lazoo Art Box app). They loved this one, and I mentioned that scribbling counts as writing and helps kids turn into readers!

We had a lot of fun with this one, talking about food and cooking.

Open house: Books, balls, toys, and ipads were available for the kids and families to play with. I showed different apps to some of the older kids, and lots of the parents were trying to download apps as we were wrapping up.
