My bilingual family storytimes all follow the same outline, and I fill in the blanks with books, flannel stories, and activities!
Book: Fiesta! by Ginger Fogleson Guy
As I read each page, I put up all the items on the board. It took awhile as we got up towards ten, but luckily the kids are always willing to jump in and be the board helpers, so they did most of the work. At the end, we added the words in Spanish, and repeated the vocabulary before cleaning up.
Book: The Bossy Gallito, retold by Lucía M. González.
I handed out pieces ahead of time, and as each new element was introduced, I asked (in Spanish) who had the matching piece to come put up on the board. We also reviewed the vocabulary at the end.
Book. Moví la mano, by Jorge Luján. Ok, I loved this book. It is so creative and pretty and fun. I imagined all sorts of great conversation happening, since we usually have a good mix of little kids and older ones who want to jump in and talk.
Yeah, none of that happened. They were so not impressed with this book, but they did sit patiently through it before running off to find the cookies. Oh well.
