My bilingual family storytimes all follow the same outline, and I fill in the blanks with books, flannel stories, and activities!
This was probably my most successful bilingual storytime yet, completely due to the audience. I had my regulars- a couple native Spanish speaking families, a family where the mom speaks some Spanish and wants the kids to learn– and some brand new faces, including a gaggle of 3rd and 4th grade girls and an older gentleman who wanted to keep up his Spanish! The highlight was that two of the girls are part hispanic and proud of it, but don’t speak much Spanish, and they wanted to learn!
Book: What can you do with a rebozo? by Carmen Tafolla
Felt board activity: Colors! We learned the colors and built a rainbow. One girl was named Iris, and totally made the connection that her name was part of the word for rainbow, which just made my heart melt.
Book: The pigeon finds a hotdog! and La paloma encuentra un perro caliente!, by Mo Willems. I read it first in English and then in Spanish, and the kids (and grownups) were howling with laughter.
Book: Counting Ovejas by Sarah Weeks. Before we read this, I passed out the laminated story pieces, and each kid brought theirs up to the board as I said the number/color. At the end we counted all the sheep on the board!
